Baby Riding an Elephant

More Studio Tour

The most important place in a studio – a comfortable
place to sit. My grandfather's tool chest is in front of
the chair. I use it a a table, but it's still full of tools.
Some of them I use, some are a mystery to me.

On the windowsill

Also on the windowsill. My mother crocheted
the tiny diaper on the tiny baby doll. She had
her own quirky form of creativity.

Plants and Leaves

This started last spring as a painting of ferns
unfolding in my yard, but it drifted.

The spaceman was mine when I was a kid. He used to have
a helmet that looked like a bell jar

Plastic skull – I don't know where his hat is from, but it's
covered with great trinkets and coins. Those are my grandfather's
indian clubs in the background.

Plaster skull, real horn, real bones, and an old painting in
the background. My students always spend a couple of days
each semester drawing bones.

Cupcake with Sprinkles

I thought it would be nice to post a studio tour over the next few days, so here are the first three photos.

This is the view from the door.
It's a little messier than usual because I've been framing some paintings.

My palette. It's an old enamel tabletop sitting on a table with wheels. When I work large I clear the whole surface. Other times it fills up with paint, brushes, medium, etc. Characteristically messy.

A painting and its subjects.

Pumpkins

oil on canvas          16" x 20"
I took some photos of this painting in process. You can see them below.

This was the first step. I didn't like the overhead view, so I changed it to the image below.

This was something I could work with.

Fiddling with color in the background.

Painted out the background. To get to the finished painting I had to change the crate and the little squash's shape. The background went from dark to light to dark several times. I rarely do preliminary drawings or work out an image in advance. I prefer to figure things out through the process of painting.
